Silver jewellery care tips
How to keep silver shining for years.
To keep silver jewellery looking its best, avoid wearing it while applying body care products such as lotions or creams. Perfume, hair dye and hairspray can also dull the shine of silver.
Do not wear jewellery while washing or swimming in a pool, and keep it dry. Avoid wearing it during sport – sweat oxidises silver.
Store silver jewellery in a dry, airtight box or container to prevent oxidation. Wooden boxes or special jewellery boxes lined with soft fabric are best.
Why does silver tarnish?
Sterling 925 silver darkens over time as it reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, with sweat and with cosmetics. It is a natural process, not a sign of poor quality, and pieces that are worn often and stored well tarnish more slowly.
How to clean silver jewellery at home?
Wipe lightly tarnished silver with a special silver polishing cloth. Wash off dirt in warm water with a few drops of mild soap, rinse, and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and abrasive sponges – they scratch the surface. Do not soak oxidised silver or pieces with pearls, amber or enamel in cleaners – a dry soft cloth is enough.
